We Request Immediate and Unconditional Release of Women’s Rights Activists Arrested in Tehran

Your Excellency,

We should like to express our great concern over the recent arrests of 38 women’s rights advocates on March 4 during a peaceful gathering in front of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran, and demand for immediate and unconditional release of those still under arrest and public charge.

According to the Article 27 of the Iranian Constitution, “Public gatherings and marches may be freely held, provided arms are not carried and that they are not detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam.” We understand that these women had peacefully gathered to show their solidarity with the 5 women activists who were on trial for their participation in a previous peaceful protest. We are also distressed by the use of unnecessary violence by the National Security Police officers against these women.

We request you to free all the people arrested immediately and ensure their safety and security. They are demanding for their legitimate rights and should not be punished. We call upon your fair mind to ensure universal women’s rights and human rights.
